LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts takes place on the ancestral lands of the Steh-Chass band of the Squaxin Island Tribe and Nisqually Indian Tribe, who have been stewards of this region since time immemorial into the present day. TCMoFA acknowledges the displacement of this region’s original inhabitants and the Indigenous diaspora that continues to impact communities today. We recognize the historical exclusion of Indigenous artists from art museums and the impact of colonizer museums on the dispersion of cultural heritage and art within Indigenous communities. TCMoFA is committed to increasing representation by showcasing art by, and creating relationships with, inspired Indigenous creators from this area.

Coast Salish Museum of Fine Arts (CSMoFA)

Each year in honor of Indigenous People’s Day, TCMoFA transforms into CSMoFA to present an exhibition curated by and featuring only Indigenous artists with a connection to this region. We do this to uplift and center the original inhabitants of these lands and waters, and acknowledge the history of colonization and diaspora that have impacted traditional ways of living, including forms of art.
